While natural gas has a carbon footprint that is significantly lower than that of coal or oil, renewable natural gas derived from renewable sources with a much lower or close-to-zero carbon footprint can further reduce CO2 emissions from many industrial and domestic sectors.
Given that renewable natural gas would be a drop-in replacement or substitute for fossil natural gas and requires almost no expensive changes in the transport, storage or end-use infrastructure, renewable natural gas on scale indeed presents significant decarbonization potential.
