Heat pumps work by pumping heat extracted from the environment. Such heat could be from the ambient air, or it could be from geothermal energy below the ground. In any form, heat pumps provide an efficient way of delivering much more heat energy to the process than the electricity supplied to it.
Heat pumps are a reliable source of heat energy for many low temperature industrial heating applications. While geothermal heat pumps are common in some parts of the world, many other regions could adopt them. However they can work well in many other parts of the world, and if these regions adopt heat pumps as well for low and moderate temperature applications, heat pumps present a significant decarbonization potential in the short and medium term.
