Biorefineries represents an evolution in the bio-based energy sector, and is also an acknowledgement of the value that is present in all portions of the biomass. Rather than focus on just one end product - say, biodiesel - biorefineries produce multiple end products - biodiesel, ethanol, biochar and power for instance - from the same biomass at one location, through diverse processes and technologies.

Owing to this integrated approach, biorefineries can derive economies of scope for the bio-based valorization. Utilizing a valuable renewable source such as biomass for producing a range of end products also results in multiple low carbon products being produced from the same infrastructure.

While biorefineries are in their initial stages of commercialization, their implementation across many regions in the world will provide a powerful platform for decarbonization.
